Ever keen to get the most out of the water this year I thought I'd try and coax my hubby out of bed with a new idea - lets do a downwinder! just drift down with the wind and have a chilled out time. Joined by a friend we left a van at Lancing beach and headed to Shoreham. After inflating our SUPs we headed down the beach and discovered a large shore break! Where Brighton had been pretty calm the waves here were rather larger.
I did fall in pretty quickly! but after a few waves found my sea legs and we started paddling down the coast, although we were going with the wind we were a little against the tide to start with and this meant we were having to put a bit of work into paddling. However the fun was yet to come, as we got more confident we all start having a go at catching waves and all got to have a go at SUP Surfing, which is amazing fun!
I've always been a bit hesitant to move my feet on the board and stepping back into "surf stance" or for step back turns has been a bit of a leap of faith (sometimes rewarded by a refreshing dip in the sea / river / lagoon etc). But when the board is moving it becomes much more stable and I was delighted to discover I could step back and the board would carry on happily on its course with me balancing on top.
We had a fun filled session as we paddled down the coast, pausing by the best beaches to have a go at catching waves before moving on. Along our way we met others on SUPS and surfboard out enjoying the conditions and we all agreed this was the best fun on the boards. The day after my arms were satisfyingly sore and my legs were also feeling the benefits. I feel more is tome come, as long as the water stays warm!
